How far we are from implementing solar panels into sails? That would be supercool to have it technology elastic enough and be able to generate enough energy for basically endless sailing

  1. For sailing yachts, I think we are still a very long way off from them being practical. Putting solar panels onto boats is becoming more common, but in my experience, the flexible ones are still in their infancy. They don’t have a long life cycle, and the plastic tends to get foggy faster than hard panels. Also, placing the panels in the sail is probably not the best because half of the panels are going to be facing away from the sun, and will only work while you are under sail.

  2. In general while a cool idea,
Putting the solar cells perpendicular to the water means much less power generated by the cells than flat laying them,
Every time i watch a video about Silent Yachts somebody comments why not add a sail,
But the sail would cause shadowing on the solar panel and mess with amount power generated,
Only system that seems to have a future together with solar panel(on boats) is kite systems,
BTW if i had a lot of money i would have Too Design’s Vision E yacht built

  3. A newly designed sailboat that I know of uses the propeller of the boat to generate power while sailing and store it in a battery.
Has fixed solar panels for when it is not sailing.

The battery is the used to power the boat, which does not have any diesel generator, which is quite uncommon for a sailing boat bigger than 50 meters.

I have looked for a link, but they have not gone public yet. All designs will become open source I am told.

  4. let’s focus on the big ships first.

the red dots on the ocean are the tankers.

the green dots are the cargo ships.

make hydrogen for your fuel cells.. while underway.

Energy Observer, launched in April 2017, is the first vessel autonomous in energy thanks to a mix of renewable energy and renewable hydrogen produced on board
