Spotted an electric big rig today. This style of truck is made entirely for moving trailers around on private property, and this is the first one I’ve ever seen that isn’t diesel powered.

  1. There are actually quite a few electric yard hostler options out there today. Including one autonomous one (Outrider.ai) which is really cool and built on the Orange EV base chassis here.

FritoLay has 3 of the BYD yard tractors in the ZANZEFF grant project in Modesto and runs them 24/7 with DC fast charging between shifts and on breaks.

Ottawa/Kalmar and Autocar (the yard goat old guard) are also working on EV platforms. It’s a great fit for EVs in many applications.

  2. We have one of these at our yard and it has deep cycle batteries in it and it’s run 24/7 the only time it’s down is when it’s being charged and they’re also dot numbered so they can be used on certain roads no freeways and one drawback that I see is that it does not make any noise and when there’s trailers being moved around you don’t hear it coming so the drivers have to really look and be careful for any pedestrians walking through the yard
