  1. You have to size your service department to the size of the fleet.

This can be a problem if your fleet is growing 50% a year. You can’t just throw money at the problem, you have to *train* the new staff. You will also need to weed out the poor workers periodically.

I think we are starting to see an acceleration in the growth of the service network, but it’s always going to be a balance between growth and quality until you get to a certain point.

  2. Tesla has been head hunting mechanics like crazy with attractive pay and benefits but the NDA they make you sign is hilarious. I know a few guys who worked at one for 3-7 years then left to form their own Tesla repair shop. They have a 3 month waiting list

Even my friend who owns a repair business has started training his main tech for Tesla work. Brakes, battery service , door handles. He’s done a bunch of lowering springs and similar on model 3s

  3. If you don’t have unlimited money you have to set priorities. Having lots of service centers but no (good) product isn’t a viable business strategy. You’ll just go bankrupt.

Having a good product at scale and being somehow lacking in the service center department is a viable business strategy (for a time – and they are currently trying to fix that now that money is available).
