  2. “Green was able to confirm that Tesla has been giving “one-off builds” to crash-testing agencies and that the tweaks that the software code brings are “non-visible settings on the autopilot side.”

    Normally, the crash testing agencies purchase their vehicles at retail. They do not allow manufacturers to supply them with potential “ringers” for testing. Buying cars randomly that consumers could have purchased helps eliminate that possibility.

    Since Tesla sells directly, this isn’t quite the blind test methodology it might be for other manufacturers. So the existence of these one-off builds found to be supplied to these agencies isn’t a good look.
