VW will switch to mass-producing electric vehicles with bidirectional charging next year. It could give a big boost to vehicle-to-grid technologies. The industry as a whole is getting more confident that well-managed battery packs can last a long time, some see them as underused assets.

  1. Man, I really want bidirectional charging. I already have solar panels and I would really love it if my car could act like a power wall.

  2. I rent and own an electric VW, I’m in a flat and my car charging goes on my electricity meter. No solar panels. So does this really help me at all?

    This would be totally different if I owned and had solar power generation. So while it would be a nice feature for my car, I’m not sure I’m missing out by getting this year’s model and not next year’s.

  3. California already pays Arizona to take surplus solar power during periods of lower demand. A smart grid could store that surplus power in EV batteries to use later. When you consider a Tesla Power Wall is only 13.3kWh @ $5500 using the much larger battery in your EV to store energy makes a ton of sense.

  4. Hornsdale Big Battery had a 2-year payback. 70% of the pack is backup power. Millions of grid-attached networked and managed cars will do the same earning as reserve power and arbitrage. Today’s million-mile + batteries make additional cycles a free resource to monetize.

    Half a cars pack is worth ~$15-$20K of Power walls.

  5. If the industry as a whole is getting more confident that battery packs can last a long time, I would love to see that confidence reflected in the warranty.

    Or if it would pay me well to help the grid. ATM I pay 0,15 – 0,20$ per kWh while I get 0,03$ putting energy in.

  6. * Enphase 10kW battery priced at ~28k
    * Powerwall priced at ~20k
    * Getting a car plus battery backup.. winner!

  7. So if you have an AWD id4 on order should you cancel it? Seems like it. This is a huge money saving move.

  8. Ah, u/fredtesla found my thread in this sub after shadow banning me on Electrek.

  9. Will this be in the 2022 ID.4? I’m guessing this will need hardware changes and not just software.

  10. When vehicles get 1,000 miles of range then talk to me about bidirectional charging.

  11. Dumb question – could this potentially be used as vehicle-to-vehicle charging? In other words, if someone runs out of charge, just plug into another EV to get some more?
