Back in the dark days of the automotive industry, the folks at Cummins were working with Ram Trucks on a new engine to power their full-size pickup truck. They had most of the details worked out. It’d be a 5.0L V8 turbodiesel. It’d make a generous amount of torque. It would be a match made in heaven.
Then Ram’s parent company went bankrupt.
The bankruptcy killed the deal. In the following years, Ram developed their own diesel engine for the Ram 1500. They called it the EcoDiesel and wasn’t really like what they were working on with Cummins.
Fast-forward to today, and Cummins found a suitor for their engine. There is a truck company out there that desperately needs to refresh their model line, and they are doing so with the help of the Cummins engine. That company is Nissan.
The 2016 Nissan Titan XD is powered by the 5.0L Cummins V8 making a healthy 555 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, Nissan and Cummins say that the new engine in the new truck will be 20% more fuel efficient across the entire range of the truck’s activity.

But most importantly, Nissan has instant credibility with the Cummins name. We know people who would buy something just because of the Cummins badge. It’s a name rich with heritage and a wholly-American company.
Nissan might not be on your radar anymore, but we expect the Titan XD to turn a few heads when it goes on sale by the end of the year. Will it be more successful than Ram’s EcoDiesel? It’s too early to say. But with a name like Cummins, anything is possible.
